Difference Between Slots And Slats
From a conceptual standpoint, I'd say a fixed slat is something separate bolted onto a given airfoil, whereas a slotted wing is an air channel cut within that airfoil. In other words, take a given airfoil, and bolt something on the front of it to produce a slot, and that is a fixed slat. Take it off, and you are back to your original airfoil. The difference between a classic slot and video slot is both the number of reels, paylines and bonus features. Classic slots closely resemble the “one-armed bandit’s” found in land-based casinos years ago. One armed bandit’s where the slot machines with a lever on the right side of the machine, later replaced by a spin button.
The short answer is that there is no difference between “slatwall” and “slotwall”.
They both are used to describe the same product. The product is used mainly in retail stores as fixture paneling to support brackets, shelves, hangers and baskets on which to display products for sale.
Other terms used to describe the same product are “slat wall”, “slot wall”, “slat board”, “slot board”, “slatboard”, “slotboard”, “groove wall”, and “grooved wall”.
The Birth of Spacewall & Slatwall
One night in the late 70’s, our owner, Hugh Johnson, woke up with an idea. Using plywood, glue, staples and woodworking equipment, he made a rough sample of a wall panel that had grooves. He then met with Federated Department Stores in New York City, pitched the idea and Spacewall slatwall was born.
Originally the slatwall paneling was made by hand. Each slat was glued one at a time to a base back panel. For the next 15 years, it remained the top product in retail store fixture industry.
New Uses Are Still Being Created
Today most slatwall is made of wood. However, it can also be made of metal or plastic. Once you’ve really “seen” slatwall you notice it almost everywhere. It is used in libraries and bookstores to showcase new and interesting books. It can be used in clothing, sporting goods, and gifts stores to display products. It is often used as free standing connected panels to display products, brochures and signage in booths at trade shows. Our clients are coming up with new uses all the time.

Looks like a keeper[edit]
This is now much more than a simple definition. A bit more than a stub. --Colputt 01:44, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
'slats' being considered retractable by definition[edit]
I corrected this earlier, but it seems to have been reverted. A slat is not necessarily retractable, although it often is. The definitive difference between a slot and a slat is that a slot is a notch cut out of an existing airfoil, while a slat is formed by an add-on structure outside the defined airfoil. I need to hunt down some support for this, but I recall this being the definition used in all of my aerospace engineering textbooks.
To be clear:

- This is an interesting issue, one that we have been around before in this article. The main problem is that there are lots of expert textbooks on this subject and they all disagree. The one I cited, From the Ground Up is considered 'the' definitive textbook used in Canada and it says if they move they are slats and if they don't move then they are slots, but there are other sources that say that slats can be fixed and slots can move. There is no agreement, so I have picked the clearest definition and cited that. I think if we are going to go the route that slats can be fixed and slots can move, then the whole article should be merged into the slats article, although this was proposed before and did not pass. 00:41, 2 October 2007 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ahunt (talk • contribs)
- Just a comment several years on, the slat vs slot semantic disparity remains in the literature. I agree with the position advanced in the article and above, and the differentiator should be whether the device is movable or attached to an existing wing (slat) or conceived by the designer as integral to the wing (slot.) Whether it is a separate physical structure is immaterial. The Zenith designs for instance locate the aircraft datum at the leading edge of the device, which would indicate that he considers it integral to the wing. What purpose do they serve?[edit]
I read this article trying to find out what slots are, but the article doesn't actually say what they are for, what is their purpose? Comrinec (talk) 19:19, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
- You are quite right - an obvious deficiency! I have amended the opening para to be more clear - diff - how is that? Ahunt (talk) 20:22, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
- plane does not stall on low speed (delays stall) when slots are extended during take off and during landing, especially when airport is located much higher than sea level where the air is very thin.(Avraam Antoniades Panayia Cyprus) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.7.224.149 (talk • contribs) 19:06, 31 January 2014
